The
history of Ahmedabad Gymkhana goes back 118 years, to 1885 when
the club was established and it is the oldest golf club of Ahmedabad,
from the time of the Britishers. The wooden roofed central hall
considered as the main building was built in the year 1859, and
in 1881 was made a station library by the Britishers. The birth
of the club came in 1884 on borrowed lands, and finally in 1885
the Britishers turned it into a full fledged club. Well before the
1900s the club was interestingly a transition from the Chapel
to a Library to a Club.
Even today the entrance gate welcomes the members
with a very old canon with the Queens insignia year marked
1796. Situated in a very lush green surrounding all around the club,
you feel very relaxed as if
you are in a world much away from the busy city life. Selected people
of Shahibaug area are aware of a historical edifice resides within
their walking distance.
Ahmedabad Gymkhana like other Colonial Cousins
has withstood the test of time in all itsgrandeur and decorum. The
wooden roof shaded corridor best narrates the events of yesteryears.
The Club was leased for 90 years in the year 1932 renewable after
a block of every 30 years. Till the year 1946 no Indian was allowed
to become a member of the gymkhana. After the Britishers quit India,
and the National Movement was in force it was the then President
and the Manager of Ahmedabad Electricity Company Mr.K.L.Paulin opened
the gates for civilians. This was the first ever club of Ahmedabad
to be commissioned as a private club in the year 1960. To name a
few distinguished industrialists to become the first civilian members
of the club were Shri. Chinubhai Chimanbhai, Shri. Arvind Lalbhai,
Shri. Narottam Chinubhai, Shri. Soli Cambatta, Shri. Harsh Mangaldas.
The club boosts for having a very elite and cream gentry of Ahmedabad.
During the days of the Britishers the club had regular gala dances
on wooden floorings, with European cuisine of smoked fish, steak
& truffle to name a few. The cooks of the Gymkhana in those
days had served aboard the Queen Ellizabeths luxury passenger
liners. The club even today serves as a meeting place for military
and civilian personals.
The present membership strength of the club in
comparison to other clubs of Ahmedabad is much on the lower side,
as the members are interviewed by a scrutiny committee, proposed
and seconded by the members having a five year standing in the club
them selves. The club believes in having a elite and sophisticated
gentry both amongst civilian & military personals. The category
of members are as under:
| >
Life Members |
| >
Institutional Members |
| >
Service members |
| >
Permanent Members |
| >
Army Members |
The club is proud & privileged of having distinguished members
like Mr.Geet Sethi World Billiards Champion who began his career
by playing Billiards on the green blaze of the club, together with
Mr.Priyesh Shah snooker enthusiast who represented Gujarat at the
national level.
Ahmedabad Gymkhana is considered to be a place even Teenagers are
